Project Description:
Optimizing vehicle design requires balancing energy efficiency, performance, and handling. Traditional methods, involving extensive simulations, are slow and impractical for large design spaces. Surrogate modeling, using machine learning, offers a faster solution by learning complex input-output relationships from existing simulation data. Once trained, these models can predict system responses across the design space, reducing the need for exhaustive simulations. With adaptive learning, the models improve as new data becomes available, speeding up the optimization process.
Scope:
- Utilize Design of Experiments (DoE) and generate training data from existing system simulation framework.
- Identify suitable ML model(s) and develop it to accurately predict system responses, incorporating online learning to refine predictions with new data.
Solve the optimization problem (e.g. minimizing energy consumption) using the trained ML model and compare the process and results to traditional optimization methods.

Your skills and background
- Currently pursuing a master's degree in Automotive Engineering, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB, with experience in ML libraries like TensorFlow, Keras, or scikit-learn.
- Understanding of fundamental ML concepts, algorithms, and techniques, especially in regression and neural networks.
- Familiarity with vehicle system simulations and tools used in automotive design is a plus.
- Knowledge of optimization algorithms and experience with evolutionary strategies is a plus.
