Thesis project - User Optimized Electric Vehicle Energy Services

Project Description:
The increasing adoption of Electric Vehicles (xEVs) presents a unique opportunity to utilize their large, mobile battery packs as flexible energy resources. This concept has the potential to support the electrical grid, stabilize energy supply in buildings, and act as energy reservoir in the household. To make this concept interesting for the xEV owner it needs to optimize the cost of charging in combination with income from the services and in the end, potentially generate revenue for the xEV owner. The market for these kinds of solutions grows rapidly, the alternative that is missing is the user-centric option where the vehicle aids the user in decision making, causing it to be complexity neutral and offers only advantages.
This thesis focuses on developing a comprehensive optimization model that not only maximizes the financial return from various EV-based energy services but also respects the primary requirement of the user, having a charged vehicle when they need it. To utilize the vehicle, it needs to be connected to a charger, this will need a change in behavior for many users when reaching the parking position. Now it will be meaningful to be connected even if you as a user do not consider you need to charge the car.
The core challenge is integrating complex grid service optimization (financial component) with user-centric functionality (to understand why and when to connect) and the physical limitations of the battery (degradation). In combination with this there is the possibility to utilize these services at different locations.
This thesis is related to the Swedish Electromobility Center project “Dansmästaren” that will contribute with information and guidance.
Relevant energy services to consider, simplified description:
- Charging: Charge the vehicle to a defined SOC
- Peak shaving: Make sure that the demand for power stays below a power limit (static or flexible)
- Energy trading: Store energy in the vehicle to deliver to the grid, house or building.
- Balancing services: Deliver power on request.
The vehicle has operational modes classified as:
- V1G: The vehicle can be used for charging only
- V2X: The vehicle can charge/discharge to/from
- the Grid
- the House
- the Building
Research Questions
- Which combination of EV energy services and operational modes at the different locations provides the highest net revenue for the user?
- How can an optimization model be designed to consistently meet the user’s primary requirement while simultaneously maximizing revenue from the available services?
- What information is needed to share in the V2X scenarios to make it work?
- Will it be beneficial to optimize the household energy consumption from the vehicle and what information is needed to make that optimization work?
- How can the user be convinced that the vehicle will handle charging and services in an economically beneficial way that fulfill your needs even though SOC may vary?
Expected Outcome and Contribution
The primary deliverable will be a functional optimization model capable of handling different EV energy services.
- A model that simultaneously maximizes revenue and minimizes long-term cost
- Identifying which operational mode offers the best combination of revenue and convenience for distinct user profiles
- Intuitive UI concept to build user trust and acceptance of automated V2G/V2H decisions
Key focus areas: V2X, Charging and Grid/Balancing services, Optimization and User interaction.
